Emma C. Hummel

January 27, 1933 — January 21, 2013

Emma C. Hummel (nee Stauffer), lifelong resident of Thorofare and National Park, passed away on January 21, 2013 at age 79. Beloved wife of Lester (deceased) for 58 years, she proudly worked her way to graduate from Woodbury High School when education was discouraged for girls who were expected to marry and raise children. She was a devoted mother, loving grandmother, and known as "Aunt" Emma to many kids beyond her blood relatives. As the eldest daughter of nine children, she loved to list the names and ages of the brothers and sisters she had helped raise since she was a young girl herself. She was the main costume maker for West Deptford Little Theater in the 70s and 80s and, although quite shy and reserved, surprisingly appeared in the chorus for productions including The Sound of Music, Oklahoma and My Fair Lady. She was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of National Park. Her apple pie was the highlight of many family gatherings. Surely Jesus himself has welcomed her to the front of the line into heaven. There is no waiting for angels.

Emma is survived by her son Ken Hummel and his wife Ellen of Wenonah, daughter Judy Perseo and her husband Michael of Hammonton and seven grandchildren, Catie, Frank, Tim, Cole, Daniel, Leah and Joshua. She is also survived by her brother David, sisters Mary Hummel, Dolores Evans, Anna May Spirk, Margaret Stauffer, Lourayne Karvoski, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Lester, brother William and sister Ruth Clements.
