Phyllis K. Chew

September 21, 1927 — March 22, 2018

Phyllis K. Chew (nee Vogeding), 90, of Deptford, passed away on March 22, 2018. Phyllis was born and resided in Woodbury before moving to Deptford in 1966. She graduated Woodbury High School in 1945 and worked at Williams Dress Shop, Bambergers, Bell Telephone and was a self-employed house cleaner. Phyllis was baptized April 2, 1960 into the Seventh-day Adventist Church and became a very active member.
My Mom was waiting for this day for some time. She was tired of pain and wanted to go home. In her final days I would ask where Jesus was, and she was would point towards Heaven. Then I would ask where her Angel was, and she would point to the chair next to her bed. I know she loved me more than anything, but the Lord came first. She loved church and Sabbath school and would be several weeks ahead in the studies. My Mom was always reading her bible and highlighting the text. If she had a question she would ask me, and we would review and find an answer.
Phyllis was a colporteur for the church in the beginning of her Christian life as a Seventh-day Adventist.Mom would go door to door Selling Bible Stories and Spirit of Prophecy books. We sold heath food from our house and we became a vegetarian. Mrs. Chew or Aunt Phil, as the kids would call her, was a Pathfinder Girls Counselor for Woodbury Falcons.
My mother would help anyone in need. That also meant the family. She would volunteer my Dad for a lot of things. I got home one day and found that my bedroom suite was gone because a family needed the furniture and we would get a replacement. Thats my Mom. She was one of the most charitable individuals that I have ever met.
Phyllis had many Jobs in the church. Lay Activities leader, Investment leader, Prayer coordinator, Deaconess, Pathfinder Counselor, Junior Division leader and the list goes on.
Moms laugh was her signature. If you heard it, you would not forget it. Always smiling and seeing the positive.
In her younger days, before she was a Christian my mom was a very good dancer. She danced with the Big Bands like Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and that list goes on. It was said that when Phyllis started to dance the floor would clear to watch her dance.Mom always had a step in her walk kind of like Fred Astaire.
There is so much more that could fill a book. She always looked after the kids in the church and DVJA our school. She never forgot those who fell away from the church trying to encourage them to return.
But most of all I would like to say is that my Mother and Father raised me to be the best I could be. To love the Lord for which she would spot check me on. To be honest truthful even if it hurts. To forgive wrongs and not hold a grudge. To encourage others. To know what is right and what is wrong. To stay close to Jesus. I have thanked her for this while she was alive, and I am thankful for the time that I have had with her. I will miss her.
Her loving son for now and forever.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Thomas; daughter Kathy Cushman; grandson Timothy and great grandson Benjamin & Logan. She is survived by her son Timothy (Barbara) Chew; grandchildren Katie & Paige Cushman and Victoria Tjomstol and great grandchildren Kathryn, Caleb, Marley, Summer & Penelope.
