Jose Antonio Maiorino

December 15, 1932 — August 29, 2025

West Deptford

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Brother

Jose Antonio Maiorino, 92, formerly of Edgewater, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025 in West Deptford.

He is survived by his sister Susana; four children, Horacio Maiorino; Pablo Maiorino and his wife Marion; Cesar Maiorino and his wife Mary Connell; and Virginia Maiorino and her husband Eddie Rodriquez; grandchildren Julia, Catie, Alexandra, Ivy, Chelsea and Luka and great grandchildren Keeley, Bianca, Elias and Juniper. He was predeceased by his wife Nelida, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.

Jose was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he married Nelida in 1955. The first in his family to get past grade school, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, and started his career in the pharmaceutical industry. Seeking a better life for his young family, Jose decided to emigrate to the United States. After becoming fluent in English, he arrived in New York City in 1962 to see if America was all he had heard and hoped it would be, before committing his family to such a big change. Nelida followed Jose to the U.S. in 1964, with their three young sons in tow, and her mother Manuela bringing up the rear. They all settled in Edgewater, NJ, where Virginia was born. Nelida, Jose and the three boys all became U.S. citizens in 1969. Later in his life, reflecting on this, he wrote, “Kids, I made the right choice.”

One of Jose’s defining features was his curiosity and desire to learn and grow intellectually. He was a regular reader of the New York Times and never missed doing the crossword. He was a voracious reader across several genres, counting Kurt Vonnegut among his favorite authors. In true American style, Jose reinvented himself career-wise, moving from chemical engineering, through a brief stint in real estate, and finally settling as a stock broker in NYC. He taught himself to play the guitar and could often be found practicing after dinner.

Jose relished his role as the family patriarch and could always be counted on to provide advice or an entertaining story about his youth. He supported his children's activities over the years, volunteering for Boy Scouts and even as an assistant Little League coach. Jose and the boys also took martial arts classes together. Believing in the power of education, he encouraged his children to follow their dreams.

We will miss him.
