Marilyn Barbara Woods (née Maxwell), 81, of Wenonah, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of the family she devoted her life to. Born in Philadelphia on June 15, 1945, raised in and around the suburbs, Marilyn most cherished memories of living near the shore where she met James, before making her home in many communities throughout South Jersey. She and her husband spent more than 30 wonderful years raising their family in Medford, New Jersey, later enjoying 14 years together in Apollo Beach, Florida, before returning to South Jersey and settling in Oak Valley.
Marilyn believed that love was best expressed through caring for others. Whether she was raising her children, or welcoming family and friends into her home, she had a remarkable way of making people feel comfortable, accepted, and loved. Many of her children’s friends came to think of her as a second mother, and countless others were touched by her quiet kindness and generous heart.
Throughout her career, Marilyn worked for several companies, including Drug Emporium, Sysco Philadelphia, and Murphy’s Fresh Marketplace in Tabernacle, where she formed many lasting friendships before retiring. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She was an avid reader, loved crocheting, enjoyed antiquing, and rarely turned down the chance to browse Facebook, play online games, or cheer on her beloved Philadelphia Eagles. Above all else, Marilyn treasured time spent with her family, whose love was the greatest blessing of her life.
Marilyn is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, James R. Woods Sr.; her children, Christine (Bob) Giessuebel, James Woods Jr. (fiancée Donna Rachuba), and John Woods (fiancée Bonnie Workman); her sister, Linda (Gary Sr.) Ford; her brother-in-law, John (Laura) Woods; her daughter-in-law, Beth Woods; five cherished grandchildren; three adored great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John C. and Margaret E. (Orth) Maxwell.
Those who knew Marilyn will remember her not only for the things she did, but for the way she made people feel. Her kindness, gentle spirit, unwavering love for her family, and quiet strength will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to have known her.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Marilyn’s life on Saturday, July 11, with visitation from 2:00 p.m. until her memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at Davis & Wagner Funeral & Cremation Services, 171 Delaware Street, Woodbury, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Lung Cancer Research Foundation at lungcancerresearchfoundation.org or The Children’s Heart Foundation at childrensheartfoundation.org in Marilyn’s memory.
